Once the cataract is completely removed, a new one, which is called an intraocular lens (IOL), is inserted. The IOL is made of clear plastic, silicone, or acrylic and helps bring back normal vision. Oftentimes, the procedure even minimizes the patient’s dependence on prescription glasses or lenses after surgery. What’s great about your new, replacement lenses is that they are permanent and may not need any special care. However, cataract surgery is not a substitute for laser vision correction.
